Stryker is an international company leading the medical technology sector. It offers a diverse portfolio of medical devices and services to improve patient and hospital outcomes through four divisions: Medical Surgical, Neurotechnology, Orthopaedics, and Spine.

My placement was in the London Product Development team, operating under Orthopaedics and Spine > Joint Replacement > Knee business unit. The team’s focus is on a wearable monitoring device (MotionSense) paired with a digital monitoring platform (OrthologIQ), targeted at patients recovering from knee replacement surgery.

Role and Contributions

As a Product Development intern, my role was centred around supporting the Firmware (FW) team with development and verification testing, and minor collaboration with the Design team. My responsibilities ranged from leading to supporting different projects.

My main project involved designing, developing, manufacturing and programming an automated testing rig for the FW team as a complement to their test application. This process involved a diverse skill set, including building SW diagrams and wiring schematics, iterative CAD with DFMA, FEA, sourcing BoM, manufacturing, cable-routing and programming on Arduino C++. My contributions led to centralising verification testing on the test application, and supporting future endurance testing on MotionSense. In the highly-regulated human-centred medical devices industry, verification testing is a rigorous and crucial process, there to ensure compliance with safety standards for end-users.

Another one of my contributions entailed a blind benchmark of packaging samples against technical drawing specifications, identifying inconsistencies and defects. This required a thorough understanding of technical drawings and materials/CMF. I presented a report to the wider team and formulated recommendations to the manufacturers and internal packaging team to clarify certain specs, leading to improvements in successive samples and quality assurance in long-term packaging.
