Coutts has over 300 years of history, offering private banking and wealth management for high-net-worth clients. They provide lending products, investment services, financial planning and advice, while simultaneously achieving sector-leading sustainability credentials, including B-Corp certification.

My overall contribution to the organisation was to innovate future client-facing products while also enabling employees to work more effectively, working across 5 different teams from Rewards & Relationships to Investment Strategy, contributing to 7 different projects.

Role and Contributions

One of my key contributions was bringing Design thinking to Coutts. This was done through creating and teaching workshops to over 50 employees over 10 sessions about Design Thinking principals, using knowledge from Human-Centred Design. This knowledge was also applied in my roles within Innovation, and Rewards & Relationships teams, where I identified opportunities for value creation along with designing digital products to reinforce the personal relationship that Coutts have with clients.

These projects had longer-term outcomes, such as helping teams produce unique propositions to stand out against competitors at a sector level and enabling employees to design better products.

I also contributed to employee-facing work. Within investment strategy, I used my Design Engineering programming knowledge to automate a Fund Performance workbook, increasing efficiency by 80%, as well as engineering a Thematic Dashboard, enabling Portfolio Managers to analyse funds more effectively. I was also part of a winning Tech-A-Thon team, where we designed and pitched a ‘Carbon Assistant’ to facilitate the deletion of unneeded employee files and reduce NatWest’s energy usage. After winning this, we were invited to develop this proposition with IBM, pitching the final MVP to NatWest’s Sustainability board, and it is now expected to be integrated into over 50,000 employee desktops.
