My role as a design intern included designing data visualisations for breaking news, creating wireframes for interactive stories, and visualising designs as working prototypes. Throughout my placement, I worked on both individual projects and group projects where I was given high levels of responsibility and made substantial contributions. I was involved in many interactive features, four of which have been published and several that are ongoing. These projects covered a vast range of topics from the royal family to bird migration. As well as design, I was also fortunate to research and write a feature covering NASA’s Artemis I mission. This feature was very successful, receiving over 500,000 page event views globally.
The broad range of knowledge I have obtained during the degree so far made my skill set unique to the team as I was very adaptable. In particular, my experience in web development allowed me to effectively communicate with the developers and ensure that my designs were realistic to build. My approach to design using the design thinking process was effective in the news environment and enabled me to tackle challenging tasks with confidence and produce well-thought-out solutions. This was further aided by my competence in Figma, the primary tool used for prototyping interactive wireframes.
