AXD is a research group focusing on developing immersive audio experiences with 3D spatial hearing and personalized binaural audio. These are implemented as practical applications such as accessible toolkits of the audio technology and presenting the research to gaming / VR companies to use in their software.

My involvement in AXD was with experimenting on users’ audio spatialisation when not paying attention (to help improve hearing aid performance) and implementing software to train users to use spatial audio.

Role and Contributions

Initially in the placement I took effort to engage with every member of the team and assist with their current project to experience as much as I could. My support and enthusiasm in AXD helped build a strong sense of unity in the expanding research team.

Throughout the placement I learned a lot about the technical theories in audio spatialization and was able to use my computing skills to learn software development for running experiments and building VR scenes in Unity. Through this I was able to quickly integrate into the team’s general experiment workflow and process.

Later on I focused on helping with a major project in the team (ANTHEA) which is a collaboration with neuroscientists in UCL and hearing aid companies. I employed project management skills in running experimental pilots and coordinating timings with participants, recruiting 15+ participants and running 25+ experiments in total. This project helps AXD maintain collaboration with external groups and was useful in the team’s research for assessing hearing of users in complex environments.

Finally, I took part highly in the communication and outreach aspects of AXD by engaging in events and science exhibitions, as there was an intention to encourage awareness of our audio technologies to wider audiences.
