ZELP is an agricultural technology company committed to creating a sustainable future for agriculture and is in the final stages of developing a wearable device for livestock. It neutralises methane as it is exhaled by cows, whilst collecting critical data that helps farmers improve animal welfare and become more sustainable. As a UX Design Intern, I researched, designed and tested app solutions, turning raw data from the cow into meaningful information for the farmer.

Role and Contributions

As a UX designer my work focused primarily on discovering user needs, and solving them. Practically this means placing our users at the forefront of our work by conducting primary research and competitor analysis, creating user personas and analysing journey maps to identify the main pain points and opportunities. This also entails participating in multiple ideation sessions, sketching ideas and designing these further in Figma to develop the solutions for users. To evaluate and validate these concepts, we built functional prototypes and conducted tests with farmers to gain valuable insights for the following design iterations. Once a design is complete, we then collaborate with the software team to refine them and implement them in the ZELP app. During my placement, I’ve had the opportunity to take part in multiple projects, with internal work such as creating branded templates for the employees, and several client-facing projects such as leading the initial development of the onboarding process, designing a section of the app pertaining to the device status information and creating a demo interface for investors and milk processors. I also acquired multiple interpersonal skills, attending regular team meetings such as standups, refinement sessions and team retrospectives.
