Role and Contributions

I worked within the Z1 team, contributing to product development and in-house manufacture of prototypes for the Z1 device. This involved a lot of hands-on workshop-based activities such as FDM and SLA resin printing and the use of a variety of fabrication equipment. This included a laser cutter, electrical hand tools, lathe and pneumatic dispenser gun. I successfully managed the 3D printing equipment for the majority of my placement, conducting repairs and managing filament and spare parts stock. I contributed to the design of pipe connections, using an iterative design-build-test approach. This involved doing sketching, using Onshape (a server-based CAD software), and assessing the manufacturability of my designs. I also got the opportunity to attend some engineering trade shows including TCT 3sixty to gather information on emerging technology and potential new suppliers of materials and equipment for the company. Additionally, I conducted air flow tests on device prototypes to ensure that they are safe for animals to breath through. This involved the use of microcontrollers and Arduino software, as well as recording the data for analysis by the animal science and chemical engineering teams.
