Big Atom is a tyre recycle with a recycling facility based in the northwest of England and a headquarters in London. Big Atom’s primary mission is to support a circular economy. They are launching this vision by repurposing materials obtained during the breakdown of car tyres into more useful materials. By reducing our reliance on the extraction of raw materials, Big Atom envisions ending polymer waste through the incorporation of modern technologies into traditional waste processing techniques.

Role and Contributions

At Big Atom I worked on primarily on three projects.

Debeader assembly redesign

I redesigned the debeader mounting and hook mechanism organised its install. The new design improved the lifetime of the consumable teeth and frame, the debeading ability, and the ease of hook maintenance.

Rim Separation

I found a way to make the process of removing rims from tyres easier and more efficient. Involving and evaluation of in and outhouse solutions, organised cooperation with other trye recyclers to understand their solutions and electrically installed machinery. In doing this the range of potential feed stock big Atom can accept was increased.

Material Bagging

I implemented a cost-effective bagging line to bag 25kg of 3-10mm rubber crumb material. Additionally, to the rim removal project I conducted a pricing analysis including communication with line consumable producers to develop and deliver products. To ensure a timely delivery of the first batch of product I trained the operators to operate the line effectively and assisted in the production of the first 14 tons/pallets worth of material. Big Atom can now go B2C rather than BDB giving them a potential 1039.6% increase in their rubber crumb value. This also created an additionally revenue stream from a traditionally waste byproduct.
