My core responsibility was leading and developing a project through research, requirements, design, manufacture, testing, to handing over into operation using the Systems Engineering process. Crew onboard the vessels need to know the connection status to their remote operator in the Remote Control Centre. Ship interfaces are outdated and lag behind other industries in user experience. The solution blended a technical backend with providing an effective interface to assist vessel crew with teamwork. This project stretched me across a diverse range of activities, such as collaborating with a broad range of stakeholders - especially users, hardware design for manufacture, assembly and maintenance, app development, failure modelling and testing, distribution, and compliance with maritime regulations. The breadth and depth of Design Engineering allowed me to reach a well integrated solution with sensible compromises. This solution is required by our regulator for the safe use of the remote systems, which the company has heavily invested in. I achieved a minimum viable product, laid the groundwork for the permanent solution based on lesson learnt and contributed to developing internal company processes. There is high scope for innovation and impact in the maritime industry by applying human-centred design, technology and engineering processes from other industries.
