Working as a Design Engineer, I was assigned a range of responsibilities. In terms of organisational structure, I mainly worked between industrial designers and full-stack developers. This meant that I had the opportunity to take part in design discussions amongst the other disciplines - exercising my foresight analysis and problem-solving abilities. Following the discussions, I spent a lot of time researching and developing solutions to the barriers preventing the concepts from being taken forward. Often, this meant discussing ideas on how to approach the problems with other engineers and developers, helping develop strong professional interpersonal skills.
In terms of more specific examples (NDA allowing), I had the opportunity to work for one of the world's largest consumer electronic companies. I spent a lot of time optimising the audio performance of a product due to be commercially launched in 2025. This consisted of me manipulating volumes of speaker boxers within manufacturing constraints, requiring me to utilise my SolidWorks and Rapid Prototyping skills learned in modules such as IDE. Helping improve the performance of the product helps create a professional and serious outcome, which was vital in convincing the client to continue developing the technology and furthermore. This is essential in maintaining lasting and healthy client-consultant relationships.
