Yoto is an innovative solution for modern parenting concerns about screen time for children. They offer a screen-free audio device controlled by physical playing cards that aim to foster independence and creativity in kids. Over time, Yoto has expanded its offerings to include a diverse library of children's content, from audiobooks to music and podcasts, all designed to encourage learning and imagination while keeping children away from screens.

Role and Contributions

During my time at Yoto, I primarily focused on the hardware division of the product team, aiming to enhance user engagement, improve operational scalability, and ensure alignment with our mission of helping parents inspire creativity and imagination in children through audio.

Yoto facilitated my learning by assigning me a variety of tasks such as conducting desk research, user interviews, setting up trials, utilising Figma for app prototyping, and designing and creating high-fidelity prototypes.

Initially, my main goal was to find a new product idea that matched our company's mission. I assessed 20 ideas from a company-wide hackathon and conducted over 30 user interviews to decide which concept to develop further. This eventually led to us creating five prototypes for user testing.

Creating the prototypes with the integration of hardware components allowed me to improve my hardware knowledge and CAD design skills. I became more confident using SolidWorks, where gained a valuable understanding of DFMA principles. I also played a role in PCB modifications and assisted with the design of a custom PCB.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Yoto, as it allowed me to gain experience in various aspects of Design Engineering while providing valuable insights into the dynamic environment of a rapidly growing startup.
